Questions We Get

Sewage backup questions

Sewage is classified as category 3 water, meaning it carries bacteria and other contaminants. The problem is not only what you can see. Contaminated water wicks into drywall, subfloor, and insulation, and those materials stay a health concern after the surface looks and smells clean. Household cleaners and a shop vacuum do not address that, and a wet vacuum can spread it further.
Porous materials that absorbed contaminated water generally cannot be disinfected reliably. That usually means carpet and pad, affected drywall, insulation, particleboard, and some soft furnishings. Hard, non-porous surfaces can normally be cleaned and disinfected. We identify what is coming out and why before we remove anything.
Sewer and drain backup is often a separate endorsement rather than part of standard coverage, so it depends on your policy. Photograph everything before cleanup starts and call your carrier early. We document conditions as we work, which gives you and your adjuster a clear record.
Extraction and removal of contaminated materials is usually the first day. Drying and monitoring typically runs several days after that, depending on how far the water traveled and what it soaked into. Any rebuilding of removed materials comes after the structure is dry and verified.
It happens here, particularly in areas where storm runoff overwhelms the system. The cleanup process is the same regardless of the source, but the cause matters for your claim and for preventing a repeat, so we note what we find.
